The China Study: Revised and Expanded Edition
by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II
The first edition of The China Study was one of the books that had a major impact on our diet and lifestyle in the beginning of our healing journey. It shed light on many misconceptions regarding nutrition and the role it plays on our health.
For instance, it was this book that made us reconsider what we thought we knew about protein and calcium.
Meat and protein were terms that were so closely linked that they were almost synonymous. It was believed that meat was the best, and in many cases the only, source of protein, and that we needed plenty of it. However, too much protein can be just as detrimental as too little, and meat is not the only, nor the best, form of protein.
Plants also provide us with protein, and, as a group, are just as “complete.” Not only do they provide us with protein, but with a host of other essential nutrients.
Dairy was pushed as being the best method to get calcium to prevent osteoporosis. Yet, studies revealed that places that consumed high levels of dairy had a higher rate of osteoporosis, not less. These are only some of the many studies and information revealed in this book.
The information helped us open our eyes, and look further into aspects of health we had been told and had taken for granted. It also allows for more options when meal planning. The book is highly recommended to those who want to expand their knowledge and gain a better understanding of the role of nutrition on our health.
